Read two fascinating white papers on
time and education by Mr. Kelly Henson, former superintendent
of Floyd County Schools.
Using
the Power of Time: A Challenge to Public Education
is an exploration of instructional time,
funding, and modified calendars. In
A
Timely Matter: Using the Modified Calendar and
Intersessions to Improve Student Achievement
(with Floyd County colleagues Lynn Plunkett,
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Services and
Dennis Abney, Executive Director for K-12
Curriculum), Mr. Henson describes how
Floyd County Schools gained community support for,
funded, and implemented a modified calendar. Through
the use of intersessions over three years, Floyd
County Schools have seen impressive gains in student
achievement.
Mr. Henson is currently Executive Secretary of
the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
